Registered clinical psychologist London.

Clinical psychologists must register with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) in order to practise in the UK.  As part of this registration, clinical psychologists commit to upholding a number of professional standards.  These include:

  • Practising safely within legal and ethical boundaries

  • Practising in a non-discriminatory way

  • Understanding the importance of confidentiality

  • Drawing on appropriate knowledge and skills to inform practise

The role of a clinical psychologist is a protected title meaning they mut be appropriately qualified and registered with the HCPC to use this title.  Clinical psychologists have an undergraduate degree in psychology followed by a doctorate in clinical psychology.  As part of the doctorate, they are trained to work with people of all ages including children and older adults with a wide range of mental health issues.

Clinical psychologists are required to train in CBT and at least one other therapeutic model.  For me this was systemic work and psychodynamic approaches during training.  Following training I have developed my skills in a wide range of models including trauma focused approached such as EMDR and DBT.  Clinical psychologists are trained in the scientist practitioner model meaning that research is integrated into practise ensuring that the most effective therapeutic techniques are applied.
