EMDR is based on the theory that traumatic memories from the past are frozen in time and are not processed in an adaptive way in the brain. Through the use of eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (BLS) this information is processed so you can move forward in your life. Originally developed for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); EMDR can be used for a range of issues including complex trauma, anxiety, phobias, and depression.
If you are struggling with the impact of past trauma on your life, contact Dr Emma Arora for a free consultation today to find out if EMDR could be helpful for you. Not only is Emma EMDR trained but she is a senior and experienced clinical psychologist with a special interest in working with trauma. Clinical psychologists are trained in the NHS in a wide range of evidence based psychological treatment models. What is EMDR Therapy? And is it the right therapy for you?
What EMDR Therapy is used for:
EMDR for Anxiety
You might notice feeling anxious most of the time or being easily triggered without really knowing why? Often anxiety in the present can be connected with the past. There may be past memories which are stuck that are contributing to your anxiety in the present. EMDR can also be helpful in processing future fears which lead to intense anxiety. Contact Dr Emma today to find out more and if EMDR could be helpful.
EMDR for Complex trauma
Complex trauma or PTSD often develops after more prolonged traumatic experiences such as childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence or war trauma. In addition to some of the symptoms of PTSD you might notice difficulties with managing emotions and being quickly triggered, relationship difficulties and a low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. EMDR can be helpful in processing some of the memories of the past, again freeing you up to move forward in the present.
EMDR for PTSD
EMDR was originally developed for people struggling with PTSD where traumatic memories are being re-experienced in the present, leading to hypervigilance and avoidance. Through processing these memories, they can be stored in a different way so they are not re-activated by triggers and reminders. If you are struggling with symptoms of PTSD EMDR can be a helpful approach, contact Dr Emma to find out more.
EMDR for Phobias
You may have a longstanding phobia that is difficult to shift or it could be something more recent. There are many types of phobias some of the most common include fear of animals, medical procedures, dentist, heights, public speaking and many more. EMDR can be helpful in processing memories connected with your phobia and future fears to reduce the impact of anxiety and phobias on your life. Contact Dr Emma today to find out more if EMDR could be helpful.
