How can a clinical psychologist help? Therapy and beyond
Looking for therapy can be a daunting task. There are so many different types of therapist who use different approaches and models. So where do you start? I am hoping in writing this blog I can share more about what we do as clinical psychologists and how this might be different to other therapists and counsellors.
1) Training: Currently in the UK clinical psychologists complete a 3 years post graduate doctorate in clinical psychology. This qualifies us to work with a wide range of clients across the whole lifespan from children to older adults. Training must cover Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and at least one other therapeutic approach. For me this was systemic and psychodynamic approaches in addition to many other therapeutic models. Since training I have continued to develop my knowledge of CBT, DBT, EMDR and other models. Therefore, clinical psychologists are often trained in a wide range of models and can draw upon different approaches within their work based on client’s needs and formulation of their difficulties.
2) Providing therapy is one part of the role of a clinical psychologist. Often having worked in NHS, there are may other aspects of the role including consultant, trainer, leader, advocate, colleague, researcher and many more. The role is varied and diverse. For me protecting time for working directly with clients is important and part of the role I enjoy the most. In delivering therapies clinical psychologist work with evidence-based treatments which have been well-researched and proven to be effective.
3) Clinical psychologists are required to be registered with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) which means committing to practicing safely and ethically and working within certain codes of conduct.
What advice would I give when seeking to find a clinical psychologist or therapist?
